GFULLSMOKING KILLS

Gitanes Brunes

Dark air-cured tobacco, unfiltered, and the most distinctive smoke in this catalogue.

In production since 1910

Far East buys every product it reviews at retail. We take no money from tobacco manufacturers, run no affiliate links and sell nothing. Prices shown are indicative retail in the product’s home market.

Our notes

Gitanes Brunes tastes of something no other cigarette here approaches: a dense, earthy, almost cellar-like dark tobacco with a peppery finish that lingers for several minutes. It is a difficult cigarette and it is meant to be.

The dark-tobacco category is disappearing from European shelves, which makes this worth documenting while it exists.

We are scoring character. The intensity is not a recommendation.

What works
  • Earthy dark-tobacco character with no equivalent in production
  • Long peppery finish
  • A genuine survivor of a vanishing category
What does not
  • Unfiltered at 18mg
  • Room odour is severe and persistent
  • Actively unpleasant to the uninitiated

Tar and nicotine are the manufacturer or market-label declarations, measured by machine under ISO conditions. They do not describe what any individual smoker inhales.

Smoking kills. A high reader rating means people who smoke it like it. It does not mean it is safe, and no cigarette in this catalogue is safer than any other.
